One thing that always preoccupied me when I started an apprenticeship was what tools I needed. You don’t want to be that guy that shows up to work unprepared.
Every shop is going to be different, depending on the kind of work you will do, be it a new build of dies or maintaining dies while in production. There are always some basic tools that you will need to have to measure and check components. Once you are working, there will be a never-ending list of tools you will need that may be very specific to the work. I always wish I had someone given me a list of tools I’ll need starting out my apprenticeship. so this list isn’t supposed to be a complete list of everything you will need it is more of a basic tool you will use often and once you’re on your shop floor talk to your co-workers and watch what people are using and doing. With each of my suggestions, I’ll suggest a value option best if you are tight on money or your are hobbyist machinest and a professional grade that is meant for daily use. If you can’t afford the best tools right away, don’t stress about that. Get what you can afford and take care of it. Create a small tool fund, and when you have a little money set aside, buy quality precision tools that you will enjoy using. It will make all the difference to your day and workflow.
Digital vernier callipers
Personally, I have more than one of these because I get so much use out of mine. I would recommend and only if your finances can afford it. Have one 6” digital calliper that will live in your pocket for general shop use and a 12” digital calliper for when your machining.

Micrometer
Micrometres are great. I think for most of the applications you are going to run into, start with a 0-1” in and a 0-2 in time. If you are working with larger punches, you may find that you could use a 0-3, but you should need it to start out. Most people should be okay with you borrowing tools every now and then and if it is not a common tool.

For this one, if you are not doing a lot of layouts in your shop, you may not need it right away, but generally, in most new build shops, you will need it. If you’re a hobbyist, definitely get a cheap one. You will find uses for it.
